About Qamar Baba
Qamar Baba started his involvement in e Arts scene since 1979 when he joined school band of Boon Lay Garden Pri School and started to play his first instrument name Cornet.
1981 Migrated to Malaysia in States of Malacca where he learned Kompang from his uncle Pak Abu who leads the group called Ezhar from Ayer Molek.
Joined Hadrah group in Yung An Pri Sch lead by Mr Rosli.
1983 joined Dikir Barat Group called Sri Teruna Jaya founded by Wak Rani.He was a very active leader since 1990.His group had created a name for themselves in many major competitions and represented Singapore in several festivals overseas.To date,he is often invited to be adjudicator of dikir barat competitions and offered to instruct and train percussion and dikir barat groups in local schools.
In 1990,he further developed his interest in music by focusing on Malay Percussion under the guidance of Mr Salleh Buang on Kemuning Association.He was able to play the Rebana,Conga,Djembe,Darbuka and Tabla.One of his major appearance was to represent Singapore in JakFest 1992 in Jakarta,Indonesia.He also made other national performances which include performance for the President at the Istana,National Day Concert By the Bay 2000,Chingay 2001,WOMAD Singapore 2002 as well as the Grand Opening of Esplanade,Theater by the Bay.On top of that he is involved in performances by MediaCorp and private functions.
Qamar Baba formed Gendrum Network in 1999,with aim of creating and uploading interest for the various traditional elements in music and to promote local musicians and percussionists in the music industry.
